Accountants Mental Health Training Launches

Why mental health training matters for accountants

Research commissioned by the Federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources found that nearly one in three SME owners in Australia experienced stress, depression, or anxiety in the past 12 months. As trusted advisers, accountants and bookkeepers are often the first professionals business owners speak to when financial pressure builds, placing them in a unique position to notice early warning signs and provide support.

The role of accountants as trusted advisers

Accountants frequently have long-standing relationships with their clients and regular visibility into business performance. This means conversations often extend beyond numbers into concerns about cash flow, uncertainty, and personal stress. Having the skills and confidence to approach these conversations appropriately can help ensure business owners feel supported and are encouraged to seek help when needed.

Supporting early intervention through training

This program recognises that advisers need practical tools to manage sensitive discussions and respond effectively when clients are struggling. By building awareness and communication skills, the training supports early intervention and contributes to healthier businesses and stronger communities.

Government-funded mental health first aid initiative

The Australian Government will fund a $2.2 million program delivering targeted mental health first aid training for small business advisers. The initiative aims to strengthen the capability of advisers who regularly engage with SME owners experiencing pressure or distress.
