The Australian Government has confirmed that the carbon tax will be abolished from 1 July 2014. The repeal is intended to reduce costs for businesses and ease cost of living pressures for households.
Release of draft legislation
Exposure drafts of the repeal legislation, prepared by the Department of the Environment and the Treasury, have been released for public review. These draft bills can be accessed at www.environment.gov.au/carbon-tax-repeal.
Purpose of the consultation
The consultation process aims to:
• identify any technical issues within the draft repeal bills
• raise potential transitional issues for liable businesses and other affected entities
What the consultation paper covers
The consultation paper outlines how the Government intends to repeal the carbon tax and explains the provisions required to implement the changes. Stakeholders are invited to provide feedback to assist in finalising the legislation.
Submission deadlines
Submissions on the draft carbon tax repeal bills are due no later than 5pm on Monday, 4 November 2013. The Government encourages submissions by 5pm on Tuesday, 29 October 2013 to ensure feedback can be fully considered.
